The endorsement of stalking has been prevalent in pop culture for a very long time. Exactly how long, I’m not really sure but the earliest I’ll be citing is 1944. So it’s around christmas time that we have this surge of festive music (which I love), and inevitably we’ll hear the same song 180000, sung by different artists.
I’ve heard “Baby, it’s cold outside” at least 1500 times in the last week. It’s a cute song, but really, the male part is kind of being a little bit creepy about keeping the female part there. She’s talking about how her brother and sister will be worried about her if she doesn’t come home, and how people are gonna talk smack, and yet he’s talking about how “delicious” her lips look and how he’s gonna pour her another drink. Perhaps it’s cute and I’m just jaded from more contemporary pop culture.
Next, that song we all know, Invisible, by season 2 runner up Clay Aiken. Oh come on. He gives all these senarios of what he would do if he were invisible such as “watch you in your room”, and the chorus ends with “If I was invisible…Oh, wait, I already am”. So what? You’re watching me in my room? Is that what’s going on? Because that’s kind of creepy and weird, buddy.
Speaking of watching people in their rooms, Edward Cullen is culprit number two. Gross. (And for those who don’t know, that’s up to 5 years in prison.) Breaking into a woman’s room to watch her sleep, as Edward Cullen does in Twilight to “protect” Bella is weird. At least he’s there to protect her from, you know, “creepy” guys.
My final example comes from the song I heard on the radio yesterday while I was driving home from work that got me thinking about stalking. The recent hit, Please Don’t go, by Mike Posner is fun, it’s catchy and entertaining but there’s just one line that got me. He sings about how he and this girl are running away from tomorrow with their “lips locked” and then asks “If I wake up tomorrow will you still be here?” following it up with a sweet, and kind of creepy, “If you leave I’m gonna find you”. Oh, okay, so I better stick around? Cause that’s not scary at all.
Can you think of any other creepy examples? Movies, books, songs, anything? Whatcha got?
And now that I’m getting late for work…
